With MultiScat® it is possible to determine the loss on ignition / fusion in rock samples from prepared glass discs by estimating the mass change caused through melting and by using stoichiometric calculations based on the achieved analysis. In the MultiScat program, the estimation of mass change is calculated.

In ore prospecting as well as in geological mapping and other activities dealing with samples appearing in the crust, analyses of rocks, minerals, soils and sediments are of great importance. To be able to produce accurate analysis of a large number of elements fast and to a low cost is therefore of utmost interest among many professionals in the field. To set up and calibrate a method covering wide concentration ranges for as many as 34 elements may cause anyone a great deal of work. MultiScat® will however simplify this work to only a few days and at the same time offer an opportunity to validate the method with use of a selected CRM set. The main principals of how to do all this will shortly be described and some results from such a study will be given.

When using the MultiScat® software for analysis, there is no need to measure the background of an analytical line. This implies that the measurement can be made faster and save time for the analysis, resulting in a higher throughput of samples. When dealing with a high production of analysis, it is of great importance to be able to in an efficient way measure samples in a minimum amount of time and still have the same accuracy. In traditional WD-XRF software you have to measure both the intensities for the analytical line and the background to get an accurate analysis. In some cases you even have to measure the background on both side of the line.

This application note shows the result when replacing three calibration models for classical calibrations with one when using MultiScat®.MultiScat® was used in a study made by a larger Swedish company in cooperation with Luleå Technical University, to investigate if the MultiScat® could replace three of the analysis methods used in their production.
